SC Villa were held to a 1-1 draw by Kataka FC in a tense Uganda Premier League encounter at Bukedea Comprehensive School on Wednesday, with ugly scenes involving match officials after the final whistle.
The situation forced security personnel to fire teargas after travelling SC Villa supporters remained behind to confront the match officials. Members of the Villa technical team also approached the officials at full-time as frustrations boiled over.
The Jogoos were protesting several decisions during the closely contested game, including a penalty appeal they felt was denied.
Kataka took the lead in the 51st minute through Ali Sentamu after SC Villa goalkeeper Hassan Matovu failed to deal with a corner. Matovu, making his first start of the season, came off his line but could not punch the ball clear, allowing Sentamu to bundle it home from close range.
Villa responded from the penalty spot, with Najib Yiga converting to restore parity.
The Jogoos pushed for a winner but had to settle for a point, missing the opportunity to move to the top of the league table.
SC Villa had entered the game in good form, drawing their opening match against Kitara before winning three consecutive games against URA, Express and Kigezi Homeboyz.
Kataka, meanwhile, have now collected two points from four matches. They drew with UPDF in their opening game but suffered defeats against KCCA and BUL before Wednesday’s stalemate.
Kataka, SC Villa and the Uganda Premier League had not commented on the incidents surrounding the match by Thursday morning.
