Uganda Cranes: Khalid Aucho Announces Retirement from International Football

Uganda Cranes captain Khalid Aucho has announced his retirement from international football, it’s official.

Aucho was left out of the Uganda Cranes squad that featured in the last international window, missing on the AFCON 2027 Qualifiers and friendlies against DR Congo.

In an official statement released on Monday, October 12, 2026, Aucho confirmed his decision after earning 77 caps since making his international debut on November 30, 2013.

“Today, I officially announce my retirement from international football after an unforgettable 13-year journey representing my country, the Uganda Cranes,” Aucho stated.

The midfielder described captaining the national team and wearing Uganda’s black, yellow and red jersey as the greatest privilege of his life.

He also reflected on Uganda’s return to the Africa Cup of Nations after a 38-year wait, having featured in three AFCON tournaments.

Aucho thanked FUFA, his coaches, teammates and fans for their unwavering support throughout his career, singling out the late Fred Kajoba for his guidance and belief in him.

“The roar at Namboole and support across the country kept us going through every challenge,” he said in appreciation of the fans.

Although his playing journey with the national team has ended, Aucho says his commitment to Ugandan football remains unchanged.

“It is now time for a new generation of heroes to step forward, carry the flag, and write their own history,” he said, adding that he looks forward to supporting the next generation as one of Uganda’s biggest fans.
