Uganda’s U-17 national team, the Uganda Cubs, have booked their place at the 2027 U-17 Africa Cup of Nations after thrashing Ethiopia 4-0 in the semi-finals of the CECAFA Zonal qualifiers in Kigali, Rwanda, on Saturday.
Kingston Laryea’s side produced a dominant display at Kigali Pele Stadium, scoring four goals in the first half to secure qualification for the continental tournament.
Defender Ukashsa Jemba opened the scoring just two minutes into the game with a powerful strike from outside the box that Ethiopia goalkeeper Biniyam Adisu Bancha failed to keep out.
Arnold Kayemba doubled Uganda’s advantage five minutes later, taking his tally to four goals in the tournament.
The Cubs continued to dominate possession and create chances, with Yusuf Ssenyonga scoring twice before half-time to put the contest beyond Ethiopia’s reach.
Ethiopia had a chance to reduce the deficit in the 41st minute, but goalkeeper David Ssegirinya produced a save to deny Akrem Abduselam Jemal and concede a corner.

Ethiopia made changes at the break, introducing Jonathan Addis Mezgebe, Nurhasen Wujra Negethzi and Zemichael Minyahel Niguse in an attempt to turn the game around. However, the substitutions failed to inspire a comeback as Uganda comfortably protected their advantage.
Uganda reached the semi-finals after an impressive group-stage campaign that included an 8-0 demolition of Burundi and a 1-1 draw against Ethiopia in Group B.
The Cubs will now turn their attention to the final, where they will face either hosts Rwanda or 2022 zonal champions Somalia, who meet in the second semi-final to determine the other automatic qualifying slot.
The third qualifying place will be decided in the bronze-medal play-off on October 19, the same day the final will be played.
