Prisons edged KCCA 54–53 in a fiercely contested thriller at Hamz Stadium, Nakivubo, to hand the latter their first defeat of the season
The crucial victory saw Prisons return to winning ways following their shock defeat to league leaders UCU Angels in their previous outing.
The result also saw Prisons draw level on points with KCCA, 18, although the latter retained second place on the table thanks to a superior goal difference.
In a fiercely contested encounter, KCCA appeared poised to take control after recovering from an early 4–1 deficit to win the opening quarter 14–10.
However, Prisons came out strongly in the second quarter, applying pressure on KCCA and forcing Batambuliza into a missed attempt. A delay call against KCCA further handed Prisons an opportunity, which they capitalised on to draw level.
The introduction of Aisha Nakuya at goal attack proved equally influential, as she injected greater fluidity into Prisons’ attacking play. The side went on to win the quarter 17–12, overturning KCCA’s advantage to take a narrow 27–26 lead into the half-time break.
Nakuya’s movement opened up space in the attacking third, while her precision helped Prisons become more clinical in front of goal. They also showed greater composure in possession, limiting turnovers as they edged ahead in the contest.
The intensity carried into the second half, with both teams recording identical scores in the third and fourth quarters as the contest remained finely balanced.
The third quarter was a goal-for-goal affair, with the two sides trading blows and committing two turnovers each. Neither could establish a decisive advantage as they settled for 14 goals apiece, leaving Prisons with a slender 41–40 lead heading into the final quarter.
The contest intensified further in the closing quarter when Malisera Akello fumbled the ball, allowing KCCA to take the lead. However, the side struggled to maintain its advantage as Prisons fought to stay in contention.
Two misplaced passes from Shadia Nassanga, who was introduced in the second half for her first league appearance since the African Cup break, handed Prisons an opportunity to draw level.
Tension reached its peak in the final minute when Namulumba missed an attempt that would have given Prisons the lead. Nakito collected the rebound, giving KCCA an opportunity to launch a transition and move ahead.
However, KCCA’s attempt to capitalise on the turnover was cut short when Batambuliza gave away possession after the loose ball, gifting Prisons another opportunity . This time, Namulumba made no mistake, helping Prisons level the quarter at 13–13 and secure a narrow 54–53 victory.
Prisons will play Posta next weekend while KCCA will face off with Weyonje.
