The 2026 Absa Chairman’s Bell Golf Tournament got underway on Monday at the Uganda Golf Club in Kitante with the inaugural Caddies Tournament, marking the introduction of a new category aimed at recognising and developing the country’s golf caddies.
A total of 71 caddies competed on the par-72 course in the tournament, which forms part of an expanded four-category championship featuring caddies, gross amateurs, professionals and the main event.
Basil Atinoi claimed the men’s title after returning a score of one-over-par 73, while Joweria Namanda emerged as the best female player with a seven-over-par 78.
The caddies competed for a prize fund of UGX 2 million, with the new category designed to provide them with competitive opportunities while acknowledging the important role they play in the game.
Uganda Golf Club Caddie Master Ronald Akorabirungi welcomed the initiative, describing it as long-overdue recognition for caddies.
“This is a dream come true for many of us. For years, we have been the unseen hands behind the game, and today Absa has given us a stage to show what we can do. It means everything to be recognised and to compete alongside fellow caddies who share the same passion,” Akorabirungi said.
Uganda Golf Club Chairman Paul Nuwagaba praised the addition of the caddies’ competition to the tournament, saying it reflects the club’s commitment to growing the game through inclusivity.
“It is important that we organise the whole system in which we play this game. There are many facets, including caddies, who are very helpful and are not just furniture on the course. We thank Absa for supporting this initiative as we continue growing the game and creating opportunities for everyone passionate about golf,” Nuwagaba said.
Action resumes on Tuesday with the Gross Amateurs and Professionals competitions, which will feature more than 250 golfers before the tournament concludes with Saturday’s main event.
Absa Bank Uganda has committed UGX 185 million towards this year’s Chairman’s Bell, now in its eighth edition under the bank’s sponsorship.
