Construction of two key training grounds for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Uganda has officially begun after the National Council of Sports (NCS) handed over sites to the UPDF Engineering Brigade.
The sites include Hoima Boma Grounds and King George Stadium in Masindi.
These facilities are part of a group of training venues linked to Hoima City Stadium, which will host AFCON 2027 matches.

The handover was led by the State Minister for Sports, Hon. Peter Ogwang.
Other training grounds in the Hoima cluster include the already completed Hoima City Stadium annex and Sir Tito Winyi Ground, which is expected to be handed over soon.
NCS Board Chairperson Ambrose Tashobya said the process followed the official transfer of the land to NCS, in line with the National Sports Act.

NCS General Secretary Dr Bernard Patrick Ogwel confirmed that government has released all the funds needed, and construction is expected to be completed within six months.
Uganda, together with Kenya and Tanzania, is preparing to host AFCON 2027.
The Confederation of African Football (CAF) is expected to inspect the country’s progress in August and December this year.

The inspections will cover training grounds, stadiums, and other facilities such as hotels, hospitals, roads, and Kabalega International Airport.
The event was attended by several leaders, including Masindi Municipality MP Hon. Rogers Byamukama, local officials, members of the AFCON 2027 Local Organising Committee, and residents.
Officials will continue with similar site handovers in Gulu and Lira on Friday. These will include facilities at local universities and Pece Stadium, which will serve as training grounds for the Akii-Bua Olympic Stadium currently under construction.
