Vipers SC Fans Association will continue its tradition of giving back to the community with a charity outreach in Mityana on August 15, targeting vulnerable mothers, newborn babies and elderly people.
The annual initiative, which has previously seen the association support communities in areas such as Busega and Namuwongo, will this year move to Mityana following several requests from residents seeking assistance.
According to Vipers SC Fans Association chairperson Alex Kabwama, the group will donate to Mityana General Hospital, with a focus on supporting pregnant mothers and newborns.
“We have been doing this every year, helping different communities, and after receiving many calls from Mityana, we decided to answer that call. This year we shall be at Mityana General Hospital,” Kabwama said.
“We have a budget of about Shs10m, and this will go a long way in supporting pregnant mothers and newborns. Statistically, many mothers lose their lives during childbirth and many babies die at birth because of issues that can sometimes be avoided.”
The outreach will also include a friendly match between Vipers fans and Mityana Select at Katakala Playground, after which the association will extend support to elderly people in the area with items including sugar, soap and other essential supplies.
The activities will climax with an end-of-year dinner at Enro Hotel in Mityana, where outstanding Vipers supporters will be recognised and honoured for their contribution to the club.
Several awards have been introduced in memory of notable figures associated with the the defending champions, including the Lawal Award for Fan of the Year, named after former Vipers Nigerian striker Abubakar Lawal who passed away, as a way of preserving his legacy.
The Robert Kimuli Award will recognise the longest and most consistent Vipers fan, in honour of Kimuli, who captained the club including during its promotion to the Uganda Premier League.
The Maama Young Award, also known as the Venomous Fan of the Year award, will remember renowned Vipers supporter Rhema Nakabuye, who passed away in September 2022.
The initiative will run under the theme “Creating a Difference,” with Kabwama calling on football supporters across the country to embrace community responsibility beyond the game.
“We call upon fans from other clubs to join us and copy this initiative because football is not only about what happens on the pitch. We can also use the game to make a difference in people’s lives,” he added.
The Vipers SC Fans Association leadership includes Kabwama as chairperson, Gibson Kato Kirabira as vice chairperson, Nakitto Damalie Winfred as secretary, Tushabe Lilian as finance officer and Isa Male as vice finance officer, among others.
