Mbarara City boosted their survival hopes in the Uganda Premier League with a hard-fought 1-0 away victory over Lugazi in Najjembe.

Clinton Kamugisha scored the decisive goal as the Ankole Lions secured maximum points, marking only their second win on the road this season.

The breakthrough came five minutes into the second half, with Kamugisha bundling home from close range after being set up by Ronald Edwok.

Earlier, Ian Amanya had come close to opening the scoring but struck the post as Mbarara City pushed for a breakthrough.

Lugazi were dealt an early blow when Juma Ssajabi was forced off through injury and replaced by Joseph Othieno just 12 minutes into the game.

The hosts struggled to create clear-cut chances and rarely troubled Mbarara City’s backline.

The result means back-to-back victories for the Ankole Lions, who came into the match on the back of a 2-1 win over Express in Rwamwanja.

The win lifts Zaidi Byekwaso’s side to 11th place on the 16-team table with 23 points, now seven points clear of the relegation zone.

For Lugazi, it’s another frustrating result at home, extending their winless run to six matches.

They remain 13th on 23 points, with fixtures against BUL (A), Express (A), and Maroons (H) still to play.

Mbarara City’s remaining matches are against SC Villa (H), Buhimba (H), and KCCA (A).
