SC Villa Go Top After Victory Over Lugazi

SC Villa moved to the top of the Uganda Premier League table after securing a 2-1 away victory over Lugazi in Najjembe on Saturday.

Frank Ssebuufu and John Assimwe scored a goal each as the Jogoos moved to 21 points, leapfrogging BUL FC, who were held to a 1-1 draw by Entebbe UPPC.

Livingstone Mulondo pulled one back for the hosts, but his goal came too late to rescue a point.

SC Villa took the lead after just five minutes when Lugazi goalkeeper Allan Batali failed to deal with Patrick Jonah Kakande’s cross, allowing Ssebuufu to score from close range.

Assimwe doubled the advantage in the 55th minute, planting a header into the net from a well-delivered cross by Ibrahim Kaside.

Mulondo reduced the deficit in the 87th minute, bundling home from close range after a free-kick had been pushed onto the woodwork by the goalkeeper. The Lugazi forward appeared to be in an offside position.

The Jogoos, Uganda’s record league champions, have now won six matches and remain unbeaten this season.

Lugazi, meanwhile, sit just above the relegation zone with eight points from nine matches.
