Sports Minister Peter Ogwang has called on the Police to intensify investigations into the killing of rugby player Sydney Gongodyo.
According to preliminary investigations, the victim was allegedly attacked and severely assaulted by a group of boda boda riders and other members of the public on suspicion of theft on Friday.
Police said officers responded promptly after receiving reports of the incident and found Gongodyo critically injured but still alive upon arrival at the scene.
He was immediately rushed to Mulago National Referral Hospital for treatment but later succumbed to his injuries on Friday.
Speaking on Monday, Uganda Police Force spokesperson ACP Kituuma Rusoke revealed that five more suspects had been arrested, bringing the total number of arrests in connection with the case to eight.
Minister Ogwang commended the Police for the progress made so far but urged them to do more to ensure justice is served.
“I thank the Police for the work done so far to apprehend some of the perpetrators in the murder of Sydney. We, however, ask for much more in ensuring that investigations are conducted thoroughly and justice is swiftly served,” Ogwang said.
“Mob justice should never be an option in our communities, and I strongly condemn the act of taking the law into our own hands. Sydney did not deserve to meet death in such a gruesome manner.”
In one of the videos that showed how Gongodyo brutally met his death, one individual in a KCCA FC jersey is seen hitting Gongodyo with a big wood!
The UPL club has delivered a statement saying: “KCCA FC has become aware of social media footage showing an individual in the club’s jersey participating in a tragic mob attack on rugby player Sydney Gongodyo (RIP). The club strongly condemns the violence, stating that the individual’s actions do not reflect KCCA FC values.
“The matter is under investigation, and the club is fully cooperating with the Police to ensure justice is served.
“We extend our deepest condolences to the late Sydney Gongodyo’s family, teammates, and the Uganda Rugby community.”
Gongodyo will be buried on Tuesday at his ancestral home in Buweri Town Council, Budadiri County in Sironko.
