Uganda Rugby Cranes and Pirates Rugby Club player Sydney Gongodyo has passed on, Uganda Rugby Union and the club have confirmed!
According to preliminary reports, Gongodyo is believed to have died as a result of mob justice, although the exact circumstances surrounding his death have not yet been officially confirmed by either the Union or the club.
“A sea robber to the bone has sailed his sail. No more sea billows for him. Till we meet again Sydney,” tweeted Pirates at 10:09pm on Friday.
It’s a shocking development for a player who was used on the club’s poster for their semifinal playoff match against Heathens, passing away two days before the match.

He was a key member of the Pirates side that won both the Rugby Premiership title and the Uganda Cup last season.
It is expected that the match between Pirates and Heathens due Sunday, at Kyandondo, will be postponed.
Unclear Circumstances
The circumstances surrounding the death of Gongodyo remain unclear, with official authorities yet to release a statement on the incident.
Reports circulating among members of the rugby community claim that Gongodyo may have been involved in a road traffic incident in the Bukoto area before he was allegedly attacked by a group of people.
While others claim it was a robbery!

However, these reports have not been independently verified, and neither the police nor the Uganda Rugby Union had commented on the claims by press time.
