Wakiso Giants and Bright Stars have been relegated from the FUFA Big League, completing a dramatic fall for two clubs that were competing in the Uganda Premier League just a season ago.
The two sides, alongside Nebbi Central, confirmed their relegation on the final day of the season on Saturday. The trio joins Mbale Heroes as the four teams dropping to the Regional Leagues.
For Bright Stars, the relegation marks another low point after ending a 12-year stay in the Uganda Premier League last season. Like Wakiso Giants, they failed to establish themselves in the second tier and will now play regional football next season.
Wakiso Giants’ fate was sealed following a heavy 4-0 defeat away to Young Elephant, their 15th loss of the campaign.
Bright Stars also fell on the final day, losing 2-0 at home to Kataka FC, a result that secured Kataka’s promotion to the Uganda Premier League.
Nebbi Central entered the final round sitting two places above the relegation zone but slipped into the bottom four after suffering a 1-0 home defeat to Paidha Black Angels.
Their loss, coupled with Kaaro Karungi’s 1-0 away victory over Bunyaruguru, saw the Western Uganda side leapfrog Nebbi Central and survive the drop.
The relegation of Wakiso Giants left questions about the club’s future after a series of cryptic messages posted by both the club and its president, Musa Atagenda, on social media.
Hours before kickoff on Saturday, the club posted what appeared to be a farewell message:
“Some journeys are measured by the distance covered, others by the lessons carried. Since 2018, the road has been long, the storms many, and the silence often louder than the cheers. Every chapter eventually finds its final page. Till we never meet again.”
Atagenda also hinted at a possible departure from football, writing:
“I gave everything. Time, money, energy and belief. Sadly, football has a way of punishing those who genuinely invest in it. Some decisions are painful, but necessary. The biggest mistake is expecting fairness in a system that feeds on your passion and gives nothing back.”
Whether Wakiso Giants will continue operating beyond this season remains unclear.
