Three Arrested Over Death of Rugby Player Sydney Gongodyo

Police at Kira Road Police Station have arrested three suspects in connection with the death of Rugby Cranes and Black Pirates player Sydney Gongodyo following an incident that occurred on June 5, 2026.

The suspects have been identified as Ssebagala Noordin, Ayebazibwe Roden and Namukose Juliet.

In a statement released on Saturday, police said preliminary investigations indicate that Gongodyo was allegedly subjected to mob action by members of the public who accused him of snatching a woman’s handbag.

However, police emphasized that the exact circumstances surrounding the incident remain under active investigation.

Officers reportedly responded to the scene and rushed Gongodyo to Mulago National Referral Hospital for emergency treatment.

He later succumbed to his injuries at approximately 7:00 p.m. on June 5.

Meanwhile, police have strongly condemned acts of mob justice and urged members of the public to report suspected criminal activity to law enforcement authorities instead of taking the law into their own hands.

“Mob action undermines the rule of law and can result in the loss of innocent lives,” police said in the statement.

Gongodyo will be buried on Tuesday, June 9 at Buweri Town Council in Budadiri County – Sironko district.
