Commonwealth Games: Who is in action for Uganda on Day One?

Team Uganda will begin its medal hunt on Friday as the 2026 Commonwealth Games get underway in Glasgow, Scotland.

Uganda has sent a team of 55 athletes to compete in 10 disciplines, including five para-athletes representing eight sports federations.

Basketball 3×3 is among the disciplines Uganda will feature in, with the Gazelles set to make their Commonwealth Games debut.

There will be no time to settle in, as Nicholas Natuhereza’s side faces three group-stage matches on the opening day.

The squad comprises Jane Asinde, Perus Nyamwenge, Melissa Akullu and Jamila Nansikombi.

Ahead of the Games, Natuhereza said:

“We are excited. This is a testament to what we have done over the last couple of years.

“We are where we are because of the activities we have had in the last few years, and this puts us on the road to the Olympics.

“We need to go back with a medal, and that’s the minimum target.”

Uganda will face Jamaica at 2:55pm, the Cayman Islands at 5:20pm and Kenya at 10:15pm.

This is only the second time 3×3 basketball has featured at the Commonwealth Games, having made its debut at the 2022 edition in Birmingham.

Elsewhere, Bombers captain Batte Nuhu will take on Nigeria’s Abdulram AbdulWahab in the men’s 65kg boxing bout at 7:30pm at SEC Hall 5.

Three Ugandan para powerlifters will also be in action at the SEC Armadillo: Janet Nakayobyo (women’s lightweight), Rebecca Zawedde (women’s heavyweight) and Denis Mbazira (men’s heavyweight).

In swimming, Ugandan athletes will compete at the Tollcross International Swimming Centre.

Tendo Kaumi will contest the men’s 50m backstroke heats, Gloria Muzito and Kirabo Namutebi will compete in the women’s 50m butterfly heats, while Jordan Samula will race in the men’s 100m breaststroke heats.

Kaumi, Samula, Jesse Ssengonzi and Tendo Mukalazi will also team up in the men’s 4x100m freestyle relay heats as they seek a place in the next round.
