Kenya’s Harambee Starlets have been eliminated from the 2026 CAF Women’s Africa Cup of Nations after suffering a 2-0 defeat to Algeria in their final Group A match on Monday.
The result saw Algeria secure second place in the group and book a place in the quarterfinals behind hosts Morocco, while Kenya’s campaign came to an end.
Algeria took control early and opened the scoring in the 14th minute through captain Marine Dafeur, whose superb long-range free-kick beat goalkeeper Lilian Awuor.
The North Africans doubled their advantage nine minutes later when Lynda Bendris capitalised on a defensive mistake.
Bendris closed down goalkeeper Elizabeth Ochaka inside the penalty area, forced an error and fired home despite Awuor getting a hand to the effort.
Kenya nearly pulled one back in the 26th minute, but Martha Emedot’s powerful long-range strike drifted narrowly wide.
Algeria continued to threaten before halftime, with Morgane Ikene coming close to adding a third, only for her header to flash just wide of the post.
The Harambee Starlets improved after the restart and enjoyed more possession, but Algeria’s organised defence kept them at bay.
Kenya’s best opportunity came 10 minutes from time when captain Mwanalima Jereko controlled the ball brilliantly before sending a low effort inches wide of the post.
Algeria comfortably saw out the remainder of the match to claim all three points and progress to the knockout stage, finishing one point behind Group A winners Morocco.
Kenya exit the tournament after failing to advance beyond the group stage despite a spirited second-half display in their final outing.
They failed to not only secure a single point but also did not find the back of the net across the three group games.
They lost to Morocco 4-0 in the opener before falling 1-0 to Senegal in their second Group A encounter.
