Rwanda Awarded CECAFA Kagame Cup Hosting Rights for 2027 and 2028

Rwanda will host the CECAFA Kagame Cup for the next two editions after the Council of East and Central Africa Football Associations (CECAFA) awarded the country hosting rights for 2027 and 2028.

The decision was reached during the CECAFA Executive Committee meeting held on August 6, 2026, at the Mövenpick Hotel and chaired by CECAFA President Paulos Weldehaimanot Andemariam.

The Rwanda Football Federation (FERWAFA) requested to host the next two editions following the successful staging of the 2026 tournament.

The CECAFA Kagame Cup, which has received the support of Rwanda President Paul Kagame since 2002, brings together top clubs from the region and provides them with valuable preparation ahead of CAF competitions.

Rwanda’s Rayon Sports are the reigning champions after defeating Kenya’s Gor Mahia 2-1 in the 2026 final at Amahoro Stadium in Kigali.

Rayon Sports went unbeaten throughout the tournament to claim the regional title for the first time since 1998, ending a 28-year wait.

Gor Mahia, meanwhile, were seeking their fourth Kagame Cup title, having previously won the competition in 1980, 1981 and 1985.

Uganda’s representatives this year in the competition, Vipers, failed to go past the group stages.

Meanwhile, CECAFA has invited member associations interested in hosting the Senior Challenge Cup to submit their expressions of interest.
