UCU Lady Canons took Game One of the Women’s National Basketball League Finals after beating JT Lady Jaguars 50-35 on Wednesday at Lugogo.
Coming into the game, the Lady Jaguars carried the favorites’ tag after topping the regular-season standings and beating UCU in both meetings during the regular season.
However, the Lady Canons put those results aside, easing past the Jaguars after holding them to just four points in the opening quarter.
Martrina Anyango led UCU with a double-double of 13 points and 10 rebounds, while Sylvia Nakituuka top-scored with 15 points. Sandra Ayikoru added 10 points for the Canons.
For the Jaguars, Mercy Batamuliza grabbed 19 rebounds, but her effort, alongside the team’s overall performance, was not enough to prevent defeat.
The Jaguars, who eliminated defending champions JKL Lady Dolphins in the semifinals, now have to regroup ahead of Game Two on Friday or risk falling into a 2-0 hole in the best-of-three series.
JT Lady Jaguars are still searching for their first league title and face a UCU side that has established itself as a record-setting force in Ugandan women’s basketball.
Coach Sudi Ulanga will nonetheless believe his team still has a strong chance of winning the title this season, but a much-improved performance will be required in Game Two.
