Vipers coach Denis Lavagne has provided an update on the team ahead of their CAF Champions League preliminary round first-leg clash against Mauritania’s FC Nouadhibou this Saturday at St Mary’s Stadium in Kitende.
Lavagne confirmed that the Venoms will be without the injured duo of Enock Luyima and Enock Ssebagala.
Speaking at Thursday’s press conference, the French coach also revealed that new signing Cesar Manzoki is not yet 100 percent fit but could play a role off the bench.
“Manzoki had fitness issues when he arrived, but step by step he is getting better. He is not ready to start the game, but he can contribute in the second half and help the team win the game,” Lavagne said.
“He is very motivated to play, and you can see that in training, but we have to be patient with him.”
Lavagne remains confident in his squad as they target a positive result against the Mauritanian side.
“I am confident in the team I have to get the job done,” he added.
The coach said Vipers’ main objective is to progress to the lucrative group stage of the CAF Champions League.
If Vipers eliminate Nouadhibou, they will face the winner between Ivory Coast’s San Pedro and Nigeria’s Rivers United for a place in the group stage.
The Venoms, however, head into the continental tie after a disappointing start to their Uganda Premier League title defence, losing 2-0 at home to Entebbe UPPC.
Asked about the pressure following the defeat, Lavagne said it is part of the job.
“There is always pressure for a coach. It’s normal pressure for everyone, including the players.”
He added that the team has prepared adequately for the continental challenge, having played several competitive and friendly matches.
“We are well prepared for the game. We have played a couple of games, including Gor Mahia in CECAFA and Nairobi United in a friendly.”
“This is going to be a difficult one, just like all CAF Champions League games, and we have to play our big game to win a big game.”
