FUFA Super League Limited (FSLL) Chairman Dr. Arinaitwe Rugyendo has hailed the Government’s direct financial support to Uganda Premier League clubs as a historic milestone for Ugandan football.
Speaking at the 13th FSLL Annual General Meeting in Hoima City on Monday, Rugyendo said the intervention marked a turning point in the league’s administration and financial sustainability.
He thanked the Government, FUFA and other stakeholders for their role in securing the funding, which he said was the result of years of engagement.
Rugyendo urged the 18 clubs to use the money responsibly, directing it towards administration, player development, facilities and staff welfare.
He also revealed that Government support could more than double in the coming years if clubs demonstrate financial discipline, transparency and accountability.
“Let us not be the generation that closes a door that took over a decade to open,” he said.
Rugyendo further appealed to Government to extend the support to the UPL Secretariat and UPL SACCO, which he described as under-resourced. He said the request had already been submitted to ministry officials.
On governance, the FSLL chairman highlighted improvements in Secretariat staffing, staff welfare, capacity-building for administrators, coaches and referees, and progress in club licensing.
He also announced the appointment of Mercy Keinembabazi as the league’s in-house lawyer to handle contracts and other legal matters.
On the pitch, Rugyendo recognised Vipers SC for winning the league title and Kitara FC for lifting the Uganda Cup and securing a CAF Confederation Cup slot.
He also cited improvements in refereeing and match organisation, while reaffirming the league’s commitment to fighting match-fixing.
Meanwhile, the league’s marketing department has been strengthened with the appointment of Saddam Bulaga, who has already identified potential partnerships with companies in the coffee, beverage and beer sectors, as well as a ministry.
Rugyendo called on clubs to remain united and build on the Government’s financial intervention to strengthen the league.
