The inaugural Serena Captain’s Putter brought together nearly 120 golfers at Lake Victoria Serena Golf Resort & Spa, combining competition with business networking and initiatives aimed at supporting the growth of golf in Uganda.
The tournament, held under the captaincy of Jimmy D. Mugerwa, Board Chairman of dfcu Limited and Captain of Serena Golf Club, attracted golfers, business leaders, entrepreneurs and professionals for a day that extended beyond the competition on the course.
Mugerwa’s vision for the event was to create more than another tournament on Uganda’s golfing calendar — a platform where players and members of the business community could interact while contributing to the development of the sport.
The strong turnout at the first edition provided an early indication of the event’s potential, with players competing across several categories on Serena’s recently upgraded course.
Away from the fairways, the tournament also provided opportunities for networking, with participants using the event to strengthen existing relationships and establish new business connections.
For dfcu Bank, which backed the tournament, the event also aligns with the thinking behind its dfcu Xclusive Banking proposition, which focuses on personalised financial solutions, exclusive experiences and networks for affluent and high-net-worth clients.
Annet Kiconco, Chief Retail Banking Officer at dfcu Bank, said the response to the first edition demonstrated the ability of golf to bring together people with shared interests and professional connections.
“The first edition has been very successful. We had close to 120 players on the course, which was more than we expected. Golf brings together golfers from across the country to enjoy the game, but beyond that, it creates opportunities to connect, build relationships and create lasting partnerships.”
She added that the tournament provided a platform for business leaders and professionals to exchange ideas and explore opportunities.
“Beyond the competition, the Captain’s Putter brings together business leaders, entrepreneurs and professionals who are helping shape Uganda’s economy. It creates space for meaningful conversations, shared ambitions and new possibilities for growth.”
However, organisers say the tournament’s impact will extend beyond the day’s results.
A hole-sponsorship initiative supported by Mugerwa, club members and corporate partners generated resources that will be directed towards golf development. The proceeds will support junior and professional golfers, while an equipment drive will provide clubs, shoes and other accessories to caddies.
The initiative is intended to widen access to equipment and create additional opportunities for people at different levels of the sport.
Kiconco said the long-term benefits of the initiative were among the most significant outcomes of the tournament.
“What excites us most is that the impact of this tournament will continue long after today. The support for junior golfers, professionals and caddies shows what can be achieved when organisations, partners and individuals come together behind a common purpose.”
On the competitive front, Allan Atuhairwe emerged as the standout performer in the guest category, scoring 39 points to take the top prize. Strong showings in the men’s, ladies’ and seniors’ categories added to the competition throughout the tournament.
Backed by dfcu Bank and Uganda Breweries Limited, the Serena Captain’s Putter has established an early foundation for what organisers hope will become a recurring fixture on Uganda’s golf calendar.
