Akahuri FC have been crowned champions of the Guinness-powered Kitunga League Season 9 after defeating Zone FC 3-0 in the final held on Saturday, September 26, at Inspire Africa Coffee Park in Rwashamaire, Ntungamo District.
The annual competition brings together former students of Muntuyera High School Kitunga, the school community and football enthusiasts from Rwashamaire.
Akahuri and Zone FC booked their places in the final after overcoming Kyimiranku and Kyasha respectively in the semi-finals.
The triumph marked Akahuri’s first Kitunga League title after three seasons of trying. Captain Joash Ampumuza credited the achievement to persistence, commitment and teamwork, particularly after falling short in the previous edition.
Kitunga League chairman Andrew Ntungomwe said the competition has continued to grow, providing a platform for former students now working in different professions and parts of the country to reconnect.
Guinness Senior Brand Manager at Uganda Breweries Limited, Denise Paula Nazzinda, said the tournament demonstrates the ability of sport to bring communities together.
“At Guinness, we believe that sport has the power to bring people together, create memorable experiences and strengthen the communities we are part of,” Nazzinda said.
Beyond football, the league provides Muntuyera alumni with an opportunity to maintain physical fitness, strengthen relationships and contribute to the development of their former school.
The Season 9 final also featured entertainment and alumni networking, while Inspire Africa Coffee used the event to showcase its products to players, alumni and the wider Rwashamaire community.
The event was supported by Guinness, Inspire Africa Coffee and NBS Sport, with Guinness serving as the tournament’s main sponsor.
At the awards ceremony, Ntungamo Municipality Member of Parliament and guest speaker Gerald Karuhanga Kafureka highlighted the contribution of Muntuyera’s old boys to the school’s growth.
Karuhanga noted that the school had about 200 students in 2017 before its enrolment grew to more than 1,300 in subsequent years, alongside increased alumni participation from 2018.
