Egypt claim historic first World Cup victory

Egypt secured their first-ever FIFA World Cup victory on Sunday night, coming from behind to defeat New Zealand 3-1 and move to the top of Group G.

The Pharaohs recovered from a difficult first half in which Finn Surman headed New Zealand into the lead from a corner, leaving the African side trailing at the break.

Egypt emerged a different team after halftime and levelled matters in the 58th minute when Mostafa Ziko headed home Mohamed Hany’s cross.

Mohamed Salah then inspired the turnaround, combining with Ziko before calmly slotting into the far corner in the 67th minute to give Egypt the lead.

Substitute Trézéguet wrapped up the victory nine minutes from time, diving to head in Salah’s corner and seal a memorable night for the North Africans.

The win ends Egypt’s long wait for a World Cup triumph and lifts them to four points from two matches following their opening 1-1 draw against Belgium.

With Belgium and Iran playing out a goalless draw earlier in the day, Egypt now sit top of Group G and are well placed to advance to the knockout stages.

“It’s a great achievement for all the players. It’s a great win and a great atmosphere. The next game is very important,” Salah said after the match.

New Zealand had looked the stronger side in the opening half, creating early pressure before Surman’s header rewarded their impressive start.

However, Egypt raised their intensity after the interval and gradually took control, with Salah proving decisive as the Pharaohs completed a comeback that could define their tournament.

Egypt will now turn their attention to their final group match against Iran, knowing another positive result could secure a place in the last 16.
