James Bogere scores late as Uganda Cranes deny DR Congo

James Bogere scored a late equaliser as Uganda Cranes drew 1-1 with DR Congo in their second friendly on Monday at FNB Stadium in Johannesburg, South Africa.

The first meeting last week ended in a 2-0 victory for Uganda, with Kelvin Owusu Boateng and Bogere scoring the goals.

Bogere was once again the hero, firing home in the 90th minute after being teed up by fellow substitute Denis Omedi.

DR Congo had looked set for revenge after taking the lead through Nathael Mbuku in the 64th minute. Mbuku pounced after intercepting a poor pass from Uganda defender Geoffrey Lubangakene before finishing.

Arnold Vula, who scored Uganda’s winner against Libya in Hoima during the AFCON qualifiers, missed Uganda’s best chance when he skewed his effort wide after being picked out by Boateng.

DR Congo looked a much-improved side from the first meeting, with experienced players Noah Sadiki and Chancel Mbemba handed starting roles by former Uganda Cranes coach Sebastien Desabre.

Paul Put, meanwhile, handed international debuts to heritage players Kingdom Osayi, Diaby Souleymane and Gaucho Debohi Dieudonne, who all impressed on the evening.

The result caps an impressive international break for Uganda, who drew 1-1 away to Tunisia before beating Libya in Hoima in the AFCON qualifiers.
