Parliament’s Education and Sports Committee has raised concern over the pace of works at Mandela National Stadium, Namboole, with the facility currently at 51 percent completion ahead of next year’s Africa Cup of Nations.
The committee inspected the stadium yesterday as part of its oversight of Uganda’s preparations for the 2027 AFCON, which will be co-hosted by Uganda, Kenya and Tanzania.
Unlike Kyambogo Training Ground, which is now 96 percent complete, Namboole still has several major works pending, including roof assembly, facade works, external columns, interior finishes, mechanical and electrical installations and tunnel drainage.
The MPs, led by Cuthbert Abigaba, acknowledged the progress made but expressed concern over the tight timeline before the tournament kicks off next June.
However, project engineers and officials from the Ministry of Works and National Council of Sports assured the committee that the remaining works are being managed according to the project timelines.
The committee commended the UPDF Engineering Brigade for its work but called for an increased pace of construction and more frequent progress reports ahead of the next CAF inspection in December.
