NEC FC made a winning start to the 2026/27 Uganda Premier League season after defeating KCCA FC 2-0 at Omondi Stadium, Lugogo, on Saturday.
Richard Basangwa gave NEC an early lead in the fifth minute, capitalising on a defensive lapse to put the visitors ahead just after five minutes.
KCCA struggled to find a response despite creating several opportunities, with Charles Lwanga coming closest to an equaliser in the first half.
Lwanga was denied by NEC goalkeeper Hannington Ssebwalunyo after controlling Brian Jjara’s delivery in the 25th minute, while another effort involving Lwanga and Shafik Kwikiriza was blocked six minutes later.
Ibrahim Kasule almost made an immediate impact when he set up Lwanga in the 78th minute, but the forward’s effort went straight at Ssebwalunyo.
KCCA continued to push for an equaliser, but their attacking approach left gaps at the back.
NEC took advantage in stoppage time when Pius Obuya finished a counter-attack with a long-range strike after goalkeeper Mutwalib Mugolofa was caught miles away from his goal to double the visitors’ lead and seal a 2-0 victory
The defeat gives KCCA a disappointing start under head coach Brian Ssenyondo, who admitted afterwards that his side defended poorly.
“We defended poorly on the day and conceded two goals that should have been avoided entirely,” Ssenyondo said. “I demand far more from the players, and we need an immediate impact and response going forward.”
KCCA will look to bounce back when they visit Express FC at Hamz Stadium, Nakivubo, on Thursday, September 3 while NEC host Lugazi on Tuesday at Lugogo.
