Queen Cranes Slip in U-20 World Cup Qualifier First Leg

•Ghana 2-1 Uganda

Uganda U-20 women’s national team, the Queen Cranes, suffered a 2-1 defeat against hosts Ghana on Sunday in the first leg of the final round of the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup African qualifiers at Accra Sports Stadium.

Agnes Nabukenya drew first blood for the Queen Cranes before the Black Princesses fought back through Priscilla Mensah and Latifa Abesik.

Nabukenya scored a beauty, receiving a backward pass from Vicky Atyeronimungu before whipping the ball into the top corner from just outside the box after 35 minutes.

But the lead evaporated in the 56th minute when Mensah rose high to head home from a well-delivered free kick by captain Linda Owusu Ansah.

Just when Uganda looked to have done enough to absorb the hosts’ relentless pressure, Ghana took the lead.

Abesik was in the right place to finish with a brilliant strike into the roof after Jessica Appiah had beaten two markers in a sweeping move.

Uganda now has to win by at least 1-0 to overturn the deficit in the return leg next week at FUFA Stadium in Kadiba as they seek to qualify for their maiden FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup.

Per qualification rules, if the aggregate score is tied after the second leg, the away goals rule will be applied, and if still level, a penalty shootout (no extra time) will determine the winner.

Ghana are bidding to qualify for their eighth FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup, with Poland set to host the event in September this year.
