Sam Ssimbwa marked a winning return as URA FC head coach as the Tax Collectors beat hosts UPDF FC 1-0 at Nakivubo in the Uganda Premier League on Tuesday.
Denis Ssekitoleko turned Isma Mugulusi’s effort into his own net to hand URA all three points.
Ssimbwa, who was unveiled on Tuesday just hours before kick-off, had spent only two days with the team following his appointment.
He replaced Jimmy Kintu Mwera, who was sacked after a poor start to the season.
“We have managed to take the three points, but it wasn’t a straightforward affair. We missed plenty of opportunities, and they could have equalised on one occasion with just a chance,” Ssimbwa said after the match.
“In these two days I have been with the team, I have spent much of the time talking to the players to build their character, and I have changed a few things here and there.
“The team had been keeping possession too much in their own half. We changed that today and tried to play more in the opponent’s half, which I believe can hurt an opponent.”
The victory was URA’s second of the season, following their 2-1 win over Maroons at Wankulukuku in their league opener.
“We want to build on this victory and ensure we can turn it into a good season. We will win many games this season if we prepare well,” he added.
The win lifts the Tax Collectors to 14th place in the standings, with seven points from eight matches.
This is Ssimbwa’s second spell in charge of URA, having previously coached the club between 2018 and 2021.
