UCU Lady Canons are one win away from being crowned Women’s National Basketball League champions after defeating JT Lady Jaguars 68-63 in Game Three of the finals on Wednesday at Lugogo.
The victory gives UCU a commanding 3-0 lead in the best-of-seven series, meaning they will clinch the title if they win Friday’s Game Four.
Coached by Nicholas Natuhereza, the Lady Canons made a strong start, leading 17-14 after the opening quarter before extending their advantage to six points by halftime.
The contest remained closely fought in the third quarter, with the lead changing hands before UCU entered the final quarter with a narrow 51-49 advantage.
UCU then took control early in the fourth, putting together a 13-0 run, highlighted by a three-pointer and two jumpers from Zoe Atek, to pull away from JT.
Atek finished with 17 points, while Matrina Anyango posted a double-double of 17 points and 21 rebounds. Mariam Namukwaya added 13 points.
Brenda Kayaga led JT with 22 points, while Sandra Ayikoru and Aziida Nabayunga contributed 10 points apiece.
UCU dominated the boards, winning the rebounding battle 64-43, despite committing 22 turnovers.
