Fortebet and Real Stars Sports Agency have recognised three Ugandan sports personalities for their outstanding performances in September, while veteran journalist and former footballer Yusuf Baliruno received a Lifetime Achievement Award.
The awards were presented on Tuesday, October 6, at Molecule Restaurant in Kololo, with winners selected from netball, boxing and golf.
Uganda’s Africa Netball Cup Most Valuable Player Shadia Nasanga claimed the netball award, beating fellow She Cranes players Margaret Baagala and Christine Namulumba Kango.
The accolade was Nasanga’s third Fortebet Real Stars Sports Monthly Award. She dedicated the recognition to the entire netball fraternity, including her teammates, coaches, management and supporters.
Netball Uganda President Jocelyn Uchanda, who presented the award, praised Nasanga for her leadership and contribution to Uganda’s historic title-winning campaign.
In boxing, Farahat Manirola was rewarded for his victory over Georgii Chelokhsaev in their rematch at the Vologda Sports Palace in Russia. Manirola won by unanimous decision to secure the award ahead of Muzafaru Ssebuliba and Stanley Mugerwa.
The boxer, who is nicknamed “The Nightmare,” said winning the Fortebet Real Stars award was one of his targets when he travelled to Russia.
In golf, professional Ronald Rugumayo emerged winner after a strong September that included victories at the Uganda Professional Open, the MTN Pro Tee tournament and the Pearl of Africa Sunshine Development Tour. He beat fellow professionals Willy Deus Kitata and Abraham Ainamani to the award.
The Lifetime Achievement Award went to Yusuf Baliruno, a veteran journalist and former footballer who played as a defensive midfielder and later as a sweeper in the early 2000s.
Baliruno, popularly associated with the Masaza Cup, said the recognition was a major motivation to continue contributing to the sports industry.
The ceremony was attended by several veteran journalists, football agent Hon. Kayemba Solo and Netball Uganda President Jocelyn Uchanda.
Fortebet was represented by Resty Mbatidde Namugema, while Laura Kahunde represented Jude Colour Solutions. Real Stars Sports Agency CEO Isaac Mukasa led the event.
