CAS Ruling on Senegal’s AFCON 2025 Appeal Expected in November

The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) is expected to deliver its ruling on Senegal’s appeal against the decision to strip the country of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations title and award it to Morocco at the end of November 2026.

CAS confirmed in a statement on Monday, October 19, that its arbitration panel is continuing deliberations following a hearing held behind closed doors at its headquarters in Lausanne, Switzerland, on October 8.

The case involves the Senegalese Football Federation (FSF), the Confederation of African Football (CAF) and the Royal Moroccan Football Federation (FRMF).

Senegal is challenging CAF’s decision to overturn the result of the January 18 final in Rabat, where the Teranga Lions defeated hosts Morocco 1-0 after extra time to win the continental title.

The final was marred by controversy late in regulation time when Senegal’s players walked off the pitch for approximately 14 minutes in protest after the referee awarded Morocco a penalty. The Senegalese players later returned, Morocco missed the spot-kick, and Pape Gueye scored the decisive goal in extra time.

However, CAF’s Appeal Board overturned the result on March 17, ruling that Senegal had forfeited the match because of the walk-off and awarding Morocco a 3-0 victory.

The FSF subsequently lodged an appeal with CAS on March 25, seeking to have CAF’s decision overturned and Senegal reinstated as champions. Senegal maintains that the referee allowed the match to resume and be completed, meaning the result should stand.

CAS had initially indicated after the October 8 hearing that a decision could be delivered within days. However, the tribunal has since opted to issue a comprehensive ruling, known as a CAS Award, which will include the legal grounds for its decision.

The process is expected to take several more weeks, with the final award anticipated at the end of November.

The outcome will determine whether Senegal retains the title it won on the pitch or Morocco’s 3-0 award by CAF stands.

CAS has urged the public and media to rely on its official communication channels for updates on the case.
