Nigeria Thrash Egypt 6-2 to Reach WAFCON Quarter-finals

Nigeria booked their place in the quarter-finals of the 2026 CAF Women’s Africa Cup of Nations with a dominant 6-2 victory over Egypt in their final Group C match on Wednesday night.

The Super Falcons needed a win after losing their opening match to Malawi and responded with their biggest performance of the tournament, scoring three goals in each half.

Asisat Oshoala opened the scoring from the penalty spot in the 21st minute before Gift Monday doubled Nigeria’s advantage in first-half stoppage time after being set up by Rinsola Babajide.

Nadine Ghazi pulled one back for Egypt from the penalty spot deep into first-half added time, leaving Nigeria with a 2-1 lead at the break.

Nigeria took complete control after the restart. Uchenna Kanu restored the two-goal cushion in the 57th minute from another Babajide assist before Christy Ucheibe converted a penalty to make it 4-1.

Ghazi scored her second goal of the night for Egypt in the 84th minute, but Nigeria finished strongly. Rasheedat Ajibade scored from the spot in stoppage time before setting up Joy Omewa for the sixth goal to complete a convincing victory.

Despite the win, Nigeria finished second in Group C behind Malawi, who defeated Zambia 2-1 in the other group match. Both Malawi and Nigeria advanced to the quarter-finals with six points, while Zambia were eliminated and Egypt exited the tournament without a point.
