Uganda’s national boxing team captain, Nuhu Batte, made a winning start to his 2026 Commonwealth Games campaign with a convincing victory in Glasgow on Friday.
Batte defeated Nigeria’s Abdulwahab Abdulramon by a unanimous decision in the men’s 65kg Round of 32 contest at SEC Hall 5.
The Ugandan controlled the three-round bout with his superior reach and movement, outboxing his opponent from start to finish.
All five judges scored the fight in Batte’s favour, handing him a dominant 5-0 unanimous decision.
The victory sends Batte into the Round of 16, where he will face India’s Aditya Pratap Yadav on Sunday for a place in the quarterfinals.
Uganda has two more boxers in action on Saturday. Ibrahim Khemis takes on Zambia’s Albert Ngulube in the men’s 60kg lightweight division at 8:00 pm, before Alfred Ojok faces Niue’s Kalani Anitelea-Launiu in the 55kg category at 9:00 pm.
The Bombers squad also includes Emily Nakalema, Angel Katushabe and Aziz Ringo.
Uganda will be hoping to improve on its performance at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, where the team returned with one medal. Teddy Nakimuli claimed bronze, the country’s only boxing medal from a six-member squad.
