The murder case relating to the death of national rugby player Sydney Gongodyo has been adjourned to July 23, 2026, after the State informed court that investigations are still ongoing.
The matter came up for mention at the City Hall Court, where the prosecution told the court that several suspects have already been arrested in connection with the killing.
However, the court heard that preliminary forensic findings indicated that some of the individuals in custody did not match evidence gathered during the ongoing investigation, prompting further inquiries.
Earlier this month, four men were formally charged with murder and remanded to prison as police continue to hunt for additional suspects believed to be linked to the case.
The accused are Obed Mugwisa, 39, a boda boda rider; Elly Mondoni, 33, a delivery agent; Joseph Owino, 30, a private security guard; and Henry Kabugo, 21, also a boda boda rider.
They appeared before court for a mention hearing and were remanded to Luzira Prison pending further proceedings.
According to police, preliminary investigations suggest that Gongodyo was attacked by a mob after being falsely accused of stealing a woman’s handbag in Bukoto, a suburb of Kampala.
Officers reportedly intervened and rushed him to Mulago National Referral Hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries.
