Uganda Premier League side UPDF FC have appointed Hussein Mbalangu as their new head coach ahead of the 2026/27 season.
Mbalangu joins the Bombo-based Army side following a short spell at URA FC, where he was appointed in December last year to replace Alex Isabirye.
“We are thrilled to announce that Mbalangu Hussein has officially reported for duty as our new Head Coach,” the club confirmed in a statement.
No further details have been released by UPDF FC regarding the technical bench, leaving uncertainty over the status of Alex Gitta, who was in charge last season.
UPDF FC endured a difficult 2025/26 campaign, finishing 14th with 22 points, just one point above the relegation zone.
Mbalangu’s immediate task will be to rebuild the squad and steer the team clear of relegation threats in the new season.
However, questions remain over his recent coaching spell at URA FC, which followed his departure from NEC FC.
URA FC had a challenging campaign, finishing 11th on the Uganda Premier League table with 31 points. Under Mbalangu, consistency proved difficult to achieve.
He lost his first two league matches in charge against Entebbe UPPC FC and Vipers SC, and had to wait seven matches for his first league victory, which came in a 2-0 win over Mbarara City FC on March 4 at Nakivubo.
Overall, URA FC recorded just three wins in 19 league matches under his tenure, alongside 11 draws and five defeats.
