South African football has been plunged into mourning following the death of Bafana Bafana and Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder Jayden Adams at the age of 25.
Adams, who represented South Africa at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, died on Saturday, according to reports from South Africa.
His representatives and guardian confirmed the news, although the cause of death has not yet been disclosed, per Soccer Laduma, a South African publication.
Mamelodi Sundowns had not officially commented at the time of publication, urging that the player’s family be given privacy during this difficult period.
Adams was among Bafana Bafana’s players at the 2026 FIFA World Cup and also won the 2025/26 CAF Champions League with Sundowns.
Jayden Adams started Bafana Bafana’s World Cup opener against Mexico and also came on in the 79th minute against South Korea in the last group game.
Born May 5 2001 in Cape Town, played for Stellenbosch between 2020 until last year when he signed for Sundowns.
He played 90 minutes in both legs as Sundowns beat AS FAR (Morocco) to lift the 2025/26 CAF Champions League title.
Adams who made his Bafana Bafana debut in 2022, was part of the squad that also clinched bronze at the 2023 AFCON.
Cause of death
The cause of death remains a mystery, but reports indicate that he committed suicide!
Its strong to note that Jayden Adams lost his grand mother last month while the player was at the World Cup, before they faced Canada in the round of 32 fixture.
