Uganda Loses Hosting Rights for FIBA U18 Zone V

The Federation of Uganda Basketball Associations (FUBA) has announced that FIBA Africa has withdrawn Uganda’s hosting rights for the 2026 FIBA U18 AfroBasket Zone V Qualifiers due to concerns arising from the recent Ebola outbreak in the country.

In an official statement released on Sunday, FUBA said the decision was made following consultations and assessments conducted by FIBA Africa regarding the health situation in Uganda.

Last Friday, Uganda’s Ministry of Health reported two new cases of Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) in Kampala, bringing the total number of confirmed cases in the country to nine, including one death.

Uganda had been scheduled to host the FIBA U18 AfroBasket Zone V Qualifiers from June 14 to 20, 2026, at Hoima City Stadium.

Following the withdrawal of hosting rights, the regional youth basketball championship has been reassigned to Egypt. The tournament will now be held from June 10 to 15, 2026.

“FIBA Africa has officially withdrawn Uganda’s hosting rights for the 2026 FIBA U18 AfroBasket Zone V Qualifiers following concerns arising from the recent Ebola outbreak,” FUBA said in its statement.

The development is a setback for Uganda, which had been preparing to welcome teams and officials from across the Zone V region.

It remains unclear whether Uganda’s national U18 teams will participate in the qualifiers. FUBA said further updates regarding Uganda’s participation and preparations for the tournament will be communicated in due course.
