What Awaits Peter Ogwang After Cabinet Retention

Hon. Peter Ogwang has been retained as State Minister for Sports in the latest Cabinet reshuffle.

The newly released list also retains the First Lady as Minister of Education and Sports.

Ogwang returns for a second term, having first been appointed in 2022 to replace Hamson Obua.

The Ngariam County MP previously served as State Minister for Economic Monitoring and earlier as State Minister for Information, Communication, ICT and National Guidance.

In related developments, former Express FC chairman Kiryowa Kiwanuka has been appointed Minister of Defence and Veterans Affairs, moving from the role of Attorney General.

What awaits Peter Ogwang?

Ogwang will be keen to continue spearheading Uganda’s preparations to co-host AFCON 2027 alongside Kenya and Tanzania.

A key priority will be monitoring the progress of Hoima Stadium and Mandela National Stadium, Namboole, among other issues highlighted in the CAF inspection report.

This remains the biggest and most critical target, especially after Government allocated UGX 905 billion in the 2026/27 budget to support infrastructure upgrades, logistical operations, and other mandatory commitments ahead of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations.

In the short term, there are also reports of a possible investigation involving FUFA President Moses Magogo over alleged corruption claims, following similar investigations involving his wife, Speaker Anita Annet Among, who was reportedly advised not to contest again for the Speakership of Parliament.

If the reports prove true, Ogwang could be tasked with guiding Ugandan football through a delicate transition period while avoiding the risk of a FIFA ban over government interference.

Meanwhile, several sports federations continue to raise concerns over inadequate government funding, with much of the available resources now directed towards AFCON 2027 preparations.

Notably, sports federations have been given until June 7, 2026, to comply with the requirements of the National Sports Act and the National Sports Regulations 2025, or risk losing their certificates of recognition.

Uganda will also be hoping to field a strong team at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, while preparations for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympic Games and other international championships continue.
