Morocco’s FIFA World Cup campaign came to an end after a 2-0 defeat to France in the quarter-finals on Thursday, ending Africa’s involvement in the tournament.
Second-half goals from Kylian Mbappe and Ousmane Dembele in Boston sent France into the semi-finals after the Atlas Lions had frustrated the 2018 world champions for over an hour.
Morocco, who had already beaten Canada and eliminated the Netherlands on penalties to reach the last eight, stood firm throughout the first half.
France had the chance to take the lead in the 25th minute after Mbappe won a penalty, but Morocco goalkeeper Yassine Bounou produced a fine save to deny the French captain and keep the scores level at halftime.
The Atlas Lions started the second half brightly, with Azzedine Ounahi leading several promising attacks as they searched for the breakthrough.
However, Mbappe broke the deadlock just after the hour mark with a curling finish before setting up Dembele six minutes later for France’s second goal.
France comfortably saw out the remainder of the match to book a place in the semi-finals, while Morocco exited with another impressive World Cup campaign.
The Atlas Lions reached the quarter-finals after an unbeaten run through the group stage and a knockout victory over the Netherlands.
And for the second campaign running, they have been elininated by France who also defeated them in 2022 Qatar tournament at the Semifinals.
Africa sent 10 teams at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, with only Tunisia failing to go past the group stages.
South Africa, Senegal, Ivory Coast, DR Congo, Cape Verde, Algeria and Ghana were all stopped at the round of 32.
Egypt who beat Australia in penalties at the round of 32, fell to Argentina at the subsequent round of 16 to bundle out.
